When the pixels must survive exactly
Choose PNG over JPG when the content is line art, text, maps, technical drawings or anything you'll edit again: PNG is lossless, so edges stay razor sharp and colors stay exact. JPG would soften them on every save. Transparency — common in TIFFs exported from design tools — carries over to PNG intact, which JPG can't do at all.

If the TIFF used strong compression (like CCITT fax encoding for black-and-white scans), a lossless full-color PNG can cost more bytes. The pixels, however, are identical.
